All that occurs in time and relates to us deals with our ability of surprise. There is both a biological and a cultural side to it. On the level of primary impulses, itís fundamental that surprise doesnít exist in a context of danger. Then, itís a good thing that boredom exists in these contexts (That there may exist predictablity). The most important difference between wanting and desiring is that desiring operates harmoniously with expectations while wanting doesnít evaluate the means. Desire is the great motor of human events and normally, what is desired ends up being fulfilled. Desire is not exactly an expression of our mind, although it may be possible to reason. Wanting is a mental procedure, while desire is a biological force. With desire, concepts are related like premonition, which is something that we donít believe in rationally, but that we always exercise when listening to music. In fact, one could affirm that the musics that appeal to us the most are those whose capacity of surprise and deception are balanced, thatís to say, when we hear it we know what is going to happen enough times so that itís satisfactory without boring us, and we donít know what is going to happen enough times to confuse us. We could say that desire passes through time in search of events, and since temporal lines are innumerable, it's the more effective when more delimited in its field of action. By listening, desire can exercise premonition in narrow speculative bands and increase its return. Time is a dimension that desire and art can cover in every direction.
